Boating and Water Safety
State and Town Regulations That Must be Strictly Followed:

Town of Exeter Boating Ordinances
1. Horsepower: 45 horsepower maximum
2. Direction of Travel: Counter-clockwise operation for all powerboats
3. Speed: a. 32 mph maximum speed limit
    b. Speed limit for all traffic shall be 5 mph in Main Beach Cove except when taking off or dropping off a water skier. Water skiing is not allowed in Main Cove Beach
4. Night time Operation: a. All boats over 16 feet must have proper running lights
    b. Smaller boats must have a hand-held lantern
    c. 5 mph maximum speed limit
State of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Regulations
1. Registration: All motorized boars must display current sand valid registration and numbers. This includes electric motorized boats
2. Life Preservers: a. One wearable Coast Guard approved life jacket per person in every powerboat, canoe, kayak, paddleboat, sailboat, etc.
    b. Children 10 years of age and under must wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket at all times
3. Spotters: Any boat pulling one or more water skiers, watertubes, surfboards, wakeboards, etc. MUST have a spotter 12 years of age or older who is qualified to observe
4. Extinguishers and Equipment: Fire extinguishers and flares are required where applicable
5. Right of Way: Motorized boats must give right of way to all unmotorized boats
Boone Lake Improvement Association (BLIA) Regulations
1. Swimming: All swimming must take place within 50 feet of shoreline or be accompanied by a boat
2. Scuba Diving: Scuba diving is permitted in the main beach cove area only, except in the case of emergencies
